Generation No.

1. NICHOLAS1
JOST
was born at probably, Ostheim, Kreis Hanau, Hessen-Nassau, now West
Germany., and died about January 1772 in Alsace Townshsip, Berks County,
Pennsylvania.
He
married CATHERINE KLASON
October 1748 at probably,
Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. In
v 1, p 180 of the records of the First Reformed Church of Philadelphia,
also known as the German Reformed Church, is the record of the following
marriage by Rev. Michael Schlatter:
1748 Oct -- Nicholas Jost, fr Ostheim, County of Hanau & Catherine
Klasen, fr. Kebel, also in Hanau
See translation and transcription of the church records by Rev. Wm. J.
Hinke, September 1939, LDS Genealogical Library Microfilm #1905870.
Catherine Klasen was born August
1728 in perhaps, Koebel or Markoebel, Kreis Hanau, and died 10 March 1786 in Alsace
Township, Berks
County, Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Ellen G. Brobst of Reading, now deceased, owns an old bible that was once owned
by Nicholas Jost. An inscription in the bible says, "1748 I Nicholas
Jost bought this book in Frankfort at Easter." A transcription of the
family records written in the bible has been filed with the Genealogical
Society of Pennsylvania. I obtained a photocopy of the transcription on 19
August 1965. This bible is the source of the names and dates of the
children of Nicholas Jost and of his son Abraham which are presented in
this family history.
According to the Berks County will index of 1760, Nikloss Jost of
Alsace Township and Wilhelm Riser (or Reeser) were the executors of the
will of Frantz Jost, a single man of the Town of Reading. The will was
dated 19 May 1758 and witnessed by Isaac Jung. See Berks County will book
1, p 78.
In 1767, Nicholas Jost appears on the tax rolls of Alsace Township,
Berks County, Pennsylvania. He was assessed on 207 acres, 4 horses, 4
cattle and 5 sheep. See Pennsylvania Archives, 3rd Series, vol 18, p 27.
In 1768, Nicholas Jost appears on the tax rolls of Alsace Township. He
was assessed a tax of 20 shillings on 147 acres, 4 horses, 4 cattle and 6
sheep. See Pennsylvania Archives, 3rd Series, vol 18, p 96.
In his will dated 5 September 1771, Nicholas Jost of Alsace Township
named his wife Catherine, son Abraham, and five daughters, Christiana,
Mary, Magdalen, Catherine, and Eve Elizabeth. To son Abraham, all my
land, etc. in Alsace, during his life and at
death to his children. To daughters Catharine and Eve Elizabeth £256
each, when married, and the interest while unmarried. Provides for
wife Catherine, who is to have income of land until Abraham is of
age. To 5 daughters, Christina, Mary, Magdalen, Catherine and Eve
Elizabeth £80 each. Executors: friends Wm. Reeser and, Saml. Hey,
and his wife Catherine. Letters to the widow, the others
renouncing. Witnesses: Adam Frinkhaus and Wolfgang Hachen.
The will was proved 29
February 1772. See Berks County Estates, vol 2, p 104.
In 1780, Widow Joust appears on the tax rolls of Alsace Township. She
was assessed a tax of L36.12.6 on 189 acres, 4 horses and 4 cattle. See
Pennsylvania Archives, 3rd Series, vol 18, p 307. I assume that this is
the widow of Nicholas Jost.
In 1781, Catharine Jost appears on the tax rolls of Alsace Township.
She was assessed a tax of L7.11.3 on 180 acres, 4 horses and 5 cattle. See
Pennsylvania Archives, 3rd Series, vol 18, p 434. Abra'm Yost appears as a
single freeman and is assessed L3.7.6. See p 439. I assume that Catharine
Jost is the widow of Nicholas Jost and that Abra'm Yost is their son.
In 1784, Abraham Jost appears on the tax rolls of Alsace Township. He
was assessed on 140 acres, 4 horses, 3 cattle and 4 sheep. There were 4
persons in his household. See Pennsylvania Archives, 3rd Series, vol 18, p
569.
In 1785, Abraham Jost appears on the tax rolls of Alsace Township. He
was assessed a tax of L4.10.9. A single man named Abraham Yost was
assessed a tax of L1.0.0. See Pennsylvania Archives, 3rd Series, vol 18,
pp 702-703.
In the 1790 Census, Ab'm Yost of Alsace Township is recorded with one
free white male over the age of 16, one free white male under the age of
16, four free white females and one other free person in the household.
According to the Berks County will book 8, p 367, Nicholas Yost, a son,
and John Moser and John Beidler, sons in law, were granted letters of
administration of the estate of Abraham Yost of Alsace Township on 25
August 1821.

Reformed Church of Philadelphia show the following baptism by Rev.
