Philip Jost and Veronica Dotterer
of Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania
|
Philip Yost
(1718 - 1804)
Veronica Dotterer (1725 - 1798)Philip1 Yost (Jost) was born 9 May
(March?) 1718 in the Duchy of Nassau, the son of ________ and _______ (_____________)
Jost.
He died 23 October 1804, age 86 years, 5 months and 12 days, at Pottsgrove Township,
Montgomery County, Pennsylvania and is buried in the Reformed and Lutheran Union
churchyard at Pottstown, Montgomery County. See Falkner Swamp Reformed church records, p
203.
The old records of Falkner Swamp Reformed Church, New Hanover
Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania for the years 1748 to 1854, were
translated from the German script by William J. Hinke in 1940. These
records have not been published but the translation is available in
two manuscript volumes, prepared by Hinke in September 1940. At the
time I examined this translation, on 9 May 1964, it was owned by the
Historical Society of the Evangelical and Reformed Church which was housed
at Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Philip Yost married Veronica Dotterer 24 May 1746 at ____________ church at Limerick Township,
Montgomery County (then Philadelphia County). The Rev. ________________ presided. The
witnesses were _____________________ and _________________.
She was born 7 January 1725, at Limerick township, Montgomery County, the daughter of
Hieronimus and Catharina (Wesel) Doderer.
She died 7 December 1798, age almost 74, probably at Pottsgrove Township and is buried in the
Reformed and Lutheran cemetery at Pottstown, Pennsylvania. See Falkner Swamp Reformed
church records, p 200.
Unless otherwise attributed, the source of information presented in this chapter,
including the names and birthdates of the children, is taken from Henry Sassaman
Dotterers "The Dotterer Family" Philadelphia, PA: Author, 1903, pp 84-85.
Dotterer says that Veronica Yosts mothers maiden name is recorded in the
records of the Oley Moravian congregation which are preserved in the Moravian archives at
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
At the time of Philip Yosts birth, Nassau was an independent state. For location,
refer to the map on the following page. It was annexed by Prussia following the Seven
Weeks War of 1866. It is now a part of West Germany. Various biographies of his
descendants (Refer to the list following this chapter) agree that he was born in Nassau
but the exact place is not given nor has this fact been independently verified.
According to some of these biographies, Philip Yost emigrated to America about 1740, at
the age of 22 years old. This may be the same Philip Jost (also written Phillup Just) who
arrived at Philadelphia 26 September 1741 (date qualifed) aboard the St. Mark, Captain
William Wilson, master. The ship was from Rotterdam, via Cowes. The captains list
contains 101 names. (See Ralph Beaver Strassburgers, "Pennsylvania German
Pioneers," Norristown, PA: Pennsylvania German Society, vol 1, pp 297, 298 and 300.)
According to Dotterer, Philip Yost was naturalized 24 September 1745.
He was a farmer. He settled at Limerick Township where he resided until 1 April 1768
when he acquired a 204-acre farm from Jeremiah Jordan in Pottsgrove (then New Hanover)
Township near Pottstown and moved there. Since Montgomery County was not carved out of
Philadelphia County until 10 September 1784, the records of this land transaction will be
found in Philadelphia.
He and his family were members originally of Falkner Swamp Reformed congregation, but
later of the Pottstown Reformed congregation.
In 1769, he was taxed L16.4.0 proprietary tax on 200 acres, four horses and six cattle.
(Pennsylvania Archives, 3rd series, vol 14, p 41).
In 1774, he was assessed L17.1.4 provincial tax on 200 acres, four horses and six
cattle. (PA:3:14:333).
In 1779, he was taxed L21.0.0 for effective supplies and L5.5.0 for the state (or five
shilling) tax. (PA:3:14:593; PA:3:15:31). According to Dotterer, he was assessed that year
on 155 acres, two horses and six cattle and was elected an Overseer of the Poor of New
Hanover Township.
In 1780, he was taxed L93.7.6 for effective supplies on a valuation of L4,150.0.0.
(PA:3:15:515). There must have been a lot of inflation that year.
In 1781, he was taxed L7.13.0 for effective supplies on a valuation of L677.0.0.
(PA:3:16:7).
In 1782, he was taxed L3.17.5 for effective supplies on a valuation of L619.0.0.
(PA:3:16:261). According to Dotterer, he was chosen an Overseer of Highways that year.
In 1783, he was assessed for federal supply tax on 170 acres, one horse, two horned
cattle and five sheep. (PA:3:16:625).
In the 1790 Census of Pennsylvania, p 162, Philip Yost is listed in Montgomery County
with three free white males over age 16 and two under age 16 and eight free white females.
Perhaps some of his children and their families were living with him.
In the 1800 Census of Pennsylvania, Philip Yost is listed in New Hanover Township,
living alone. (See National Archives Microcopy M-32, Roll 41, p 733.)
According to Dotterer, the words on the headstone at Veronica Yosts grave are:
Hier ruhen die
Gebeine der Seeligvereinigten
Vronica Jostin,
gebohrne Dottern und Ehefrau des
Philip Jost.
Sie war gebohren den 7ten January 1725.
Lebte in der Ehe 52 Jahre, 6 Monat und
13 Tage.
Starb den 7tn Decbr 1798.
Here is a translation:
Here repose the
remains of the blessed united
(This must be some sort of idiomatic expression in German meaning perhaps "in
Christ")
Vronica Jost,
born Dotter and wife of
Philip Jost.
She was born the 7th of January 1725.
Lived in marriage 52 years, 6 months and
13 days.
Died the 7th of December 1798.
The burial of Veronica Yost in December 1798 by the Rev. Frederick Dällicker is
recorded in William J. Hinkes translation of the records of Falkner Swamp Reformed
Church, p 200. Her age at death is given as 73 years, 11 months.
The will of Philip Yost of New Hanover Township was signed 3 January 1797 and proved 12
November 1804. (Montgomery County RW 7541, OC 21202).
He names his wife, Vronica (who was still living when the will was signed) and the
following heirs: eldest son John, second son Harmon, youngest son Philip, daughter
Catharine Refshnyders six children: Philip, Mary, Andrew, Veronica, Elizabeth and
Chartharin, and his four living daughters: Elizabeth Missamer, Salomey Barlinger, Magdelon
Missimer and Rachel Ortlep. His sons John and Philip were executors.
The burial of Philip Yost of Pottsgrove on 23 October 1804 by the Rev. Frederick Herman
is recorded in Hinkes translation of the records of Falkner Swamp Reformed Church,
p. 203. His age at death is given as 86 years, 5 months and 12 days.
Note: Montgomery County Will Book: Philip Yost, Senior New Hanover, made 1797; proved
1804. Sons, John, Philip and Harmon, executors. Wife Veronica daughters, Catharine
Refsnyder, dec., Elizabeth Missimer, Salomey Barlinger, Magdalen Missamer and Rachel
Ortlep.

Anna Maria Seibel (1766 - 1822)
John Yost 2 (Philip1) was born 9 April 1747 at Limerick Township,
Montgomery County, (then Philadelphia County), Pennsylvania, the first child of Philip and
Veronica (Dotterer) Yost.
He died 13 July 1819 probably at Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery
County, and is buried in the Reformed and Lutheran Union Churchyard at Pottstown,
Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The burial of John Yost of Pottsgrove on 15 July 1819 by
the Reverend Frederick Herman is recorded in Hinkes translation of the records of
Falkner Swamp Reformed Church, p 218. In the same list, p 217, is recorded the burial by
Reverend Herman of "Mrs. Seibel at John Yosts near Pottsgrove" on 29 may
1817. Mrs. Seibel was undoubtedly the mother of his second wife, Anna Maria.
He died 13 July 1819, age 72, at Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery
County, Pennsylvania and is buried in the Reformed and Lutheran Union Churchyard at
Pottstown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. See ___________ death certificates,
v. ______, no. ________.

He married, second, Anna Maria Seibel (or Senewell or Siewel), 25 July 1793, at Falkner
Swamp Reformed church. The marriage of "John Jost, widower and Maria,
dau. Of Valentine
Seipel (sic)" is recorded in the list of marriages by Reverend Frederick Dällicker
in Hinkes translation of the church records of the Falkner Swamp Reformed Church, p
218. These marriage records have also been published in Pennsylvania Archives, 2nd
series, v 8, Record of Pennsylvania Marriages Prior to 1810, vol 1, pp 607-608, where the
date is given as 23 July 1793 for Johannes Jost and Maria Seipel. This discrepancy should
be resolved by checking the original records.
She was born 19 June 1766 at
_____________, the daughter of Valentine and Catherine (_____) Seibel.
She died 26 (or 3?) September 1822, age 56, at _________ and is buried beside her husband in the Reformed and Lutheran
Union Churchyard at Pottstown.
The source for the dates of the deaths of John and Anna Maria (Seibel) Yost is the
biography of their son Jacob S. Yost in "lives of the Eminent Dead and Biographical
Notices of Prominent Living Citizens of Montgomery County, Pa.," by Moses Auge,
Norristown, Pennsylvania: Author, 1879, p 161.
While Philip Yosts Revolutionary War service has been well publicized, it is
probable that his brothers John and Herman served as well. A return of classes of Captain
John Missimers company, dated 1 June 1780 at Limerick lists Phillip Youst among the
second class and John Youst among the eighth class. (PA: 6: 1: 770,771).
A general return of the first, second, third and fourth classes of the Fourth
Battalion, Philadelphia County Militia, commanded by Lt. Col. Anthony Bitting, Esq.,
called into actual service in October 1781, lists Philip Yost among the second class of
Capt. John Missimers Company. (PA: 6: 1: 776).
Undated returns of the Fourth Battalion of Philadelphia Couty militia lists Philip Yost
among the second class and John Yost among the eighth class of the Second Company
commanded by Capt. John Missimer. (PA: 6: 1: 787, 789).
Philip Yost is included on "A true and exact list of the names and surnames of
each and every male white person inhabiting or residing within the First Company District
being part of New Hanover Township between the ages of eighteen and fifty-three excepting
those that are by law exempted, belonging to the Fourth Batallion of Montgomery County
Militia commanded by Lt. Col. Richards returned this Twenty-Ninth Day of January
1787." (PA: 6: 3: 672).
John Yost is not listed in Montgomery County tax returns until 1780 when he was
assessed L16.17.6 for effective supplies on a valuation of L750.0.0. (PA: 3: 15: 515).
Since he was 33 years old that year, it is possible that he had been living with his
parents previously or that he had been residing in another county.
In 1780, his brother Harman Yost is listed as an inmate at Coventry in the list of
taxables of Chester County. He was listed there in 1779 and 1781 as well. (PA: 3: 12: 211,
345, 495). In 1786, Herman Youst is listed in the State tax transcript with 300 acres in
Catawissa Township, Northumberland County (now Columbia County) which he received on a
warrant from the state, probably for service in the Revolutionary War. He remained in
Columbia County the rest of his life (PA: 3: 19: 652 and PA: 3: 25: 356).
In 1781, John Yost was listed in New Hanover Township as a laborer and assessed L1.2.0
for effective supplies on a valuation of L86.0.0. (PA: 3: 16: 7). His brother Philip is
listed for the first time that year, as a single man.
In 1782, John Yost was assessed L0.10.8 for effective supplies on a valuation of
L85.0.0. (PA: 3: 16: 261). His brother Philip is listed as a single man.
In 1783, John Yost was assessed for federal supply tax on four horses, four horned
cattle and seven sheep. (PA: 3: 16: 626). His brother Philip was assessed on one horned
cow. Neither apparently owned any land since their father was assessed on 170 acres, one
horse, two horned cattle and five sheep.
On 9 July 1785, a carpenter named John Yost purchased 214-3/4 acres of land in
Londonderry Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, part of an original tract of 251-3/4
acres called "Springhill" for L775.0.0 from David Kincaid.
In the 1790 Census of Pennsylvania, p 67, John Yoast of Londonderry Township is listed
with three free white males over age 16, three free white males under age 16, and five
free white females.
For several reasons, one could deduce that this is the same John Yost who is the
subject of this chapter. First, there are only two John Yosts listed in Montgomery County
in the 1790 Census, both on p 167. One of these is listed with two free white males over
age 16 and one free white female. The other is listed as John Yost, Jr. with one free
white male over age 16, three free white males under age 16, and two free white females.
There were two John Yosts (father and son) living in Frederick Township at this time and
it is likely that these listings are for them. Or possibly, John Yost of New Hanover
Township and his family was living with his father Philip who is listed on the same page
with his son Philip Jr. (p 162).
On 7 June 1796, John Yost, yeoman, and his wife Mary, "residents of Montgomery
County" sold 54 acres, 113 perches of the land purchased in 1785 to Andrew Ortlip,
tanner and currier, for l373.0.0. And on 26 August 1800, John Yost, yeoman, and his wife
Mary, "residents of New Hanover Township, Montgomery County" sold part of this
land to Job Pyle for L470.0.0. (See Chester County Deed book Z, vol 24, pp 452-454).
Since there is no evidence of two John Yosts in New Hanover Township at this date, and
since the wives of the two John Yosts in Frederick Township were named Maria Elizabeth and
Benigna, there is some logic to the theory expressed above. On the other hand, the number
of persons in his household in 1790 and their ages dont jibe. Clearly, more evidence
is needed!
The Executive Minutes of Governor Thomas Mifflin dated Friday 15 February 1799 state:
"A Bond executed by Thomas Brooke, Israel Ortliep, John Yost, Isaac Shantz, Henry
Messimer, John Lightner, Jacob Messimer, Adam Brandt and Francis Bigony, all of New
Hanover Township, in the County of Montgomery, as Commissioners for raising by way of
lottery a sum not exceeding five hundred dollars to be by them applied to the defraying
the expense of erecting a school house in the said township, in the sum of five thousand
dollars, conditioned for the faithful discharge of that trust according to law -- was
presented to the Governor, together with a scheme of the said lottery: Thereupon the said
Bond and Scheme received the approbation of the Governor." (PA: 9: 2: 1488).
In the 1800 Census of Pennsylvania, there is a John Yost listed in New Hanover Township
with the following persons in the household:
age males females
45 and up - -
26 to 45 - 1
16 to 25 1 -
10 to 16 - 2
0 to 10 1 3
John Yost was 53 years old in 1800 and his wife was 34. Since there are no males listed
over age 45, it is possible that the census-taker failed to record him or incorrectly
recorded his age. (See National Archives Microcopy M-32, Roll 41, p 733.)
In the 1810 Census of Pennsylvania, John Yost is listed in Pottsgrove Township with the
following persons in the household:
age males females
45 and up 1 -
26 to 45 - 1
16 to 25 - 1
10 to 16 1 1
0 to 10 1 1
In addition, there is "another free person" in the household, perhaps a maid
or hired hand. (See National Archives Microcopy M-252, Roll 52, p 1199).
The Executive Minutes of Governor Simon Snyder dated Friday, 22 February 1811 show that
Philip and John Yost each subscribed to two shares of stock in a company organized to
build "an artificial road from the east end of Perkiomen Bridge, in the County of
Montgomery, passing through Pottsgrove, and by the Whitehorse tavern in Amity Township, to
the Borough of Reading in Berks County." (PA: 9: 4: 2942).
The will of John Yost of Pottsgrove Township was signed 3 July 1819 and proved 30
August 1819. (Montgomery County RW 7505, OC 21092). He says that the mother of his present
wife Mary was named Catherine Seibel and names the following children: Rachel, Sarah,
John, Jacob, Henry, Philip and Samuel. Polly, Betsey and Catherine were not named. The
will is witnessed by Philip Yost (probably his brother).
In the 1820 Census of Pennsylvania, there is a Mary Yost, probably Johns widow,
listed in Pottsgrove Township with the following persons in the household:
age males females
45 and up - 1
26 to 45 - -
16 to 25 2 2
There are no younger persons in the household. One person is listed as "engaged in
agriculture." (See National Archives Microcopy M-33, Roll 100, p 115.)
According to a biography of Jacob S. Yost in the "History of Montgomery County,
Pennsylvania" by Theodore Weber Bean, John Yosts children were (not necessarily
