This large brick farmhouse is located at 16878
Susquehanna Trail South, near New Freedom, Pennsylvania.
The Susquehanna Trail runs north and south between York and the
Maryland state line and the house is about a mile and a half north of the
Maryland line. It was built on the site of a tavern
called the Blue Ball Inn, once owned and operated by Adam Hendrix Jr.
The
tavern may have been operated by Nicholas Yost, Jr. prior to his death in
1785.
The Hendrix family graveyard is located about
120 feet behind the house. It
is enclosed by a wire fence to keep the cattle out.
The cemetery is overgrown with tall weeds and brush.
The property is currently owned and occupied by
the Phillips family. These
pictures were taken by Charles Diederich in September 2001, who visited
with Mrs. Naomi Phillips at the time.
